April showers bring May flowers, but flooded roads and waterways bring dangerous driving conditions that everyone should avoid. Follow these tips to stay safe during flooding and spring rains:
Before a Flood:
Stay Informed: Monitor weather forecasts and flood alerts from local authorities. Use weather apps or NOAA Weather Radio for real-time updates.
Create an Emergency Kit: Prepare a kit with essentials such as water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and a first-aid kit.
Know Your Risk: Identify if you live in a flood-prone area. Understand the flood zones in your community and have a plan for evacuation if necessary.
During a Flood:
Avoid Flood Waters: Stay clear of flooded areas. Even shallow water can be dangerous, as it may hide hazards like debris or strong currents.
Do Not Drive Through Flooded Roads: If you encounter a flooded road, turn around. Just six inches of fast-moving water can sweep a person off their feet, and two feet of water can carry away most vehicles.
Evacuate If Necessary: If local authorities issue evacuation orders, take them seriously. Follow designated evacuation routes and avoid shortcuts that may take you through flooded areas.
After a Flood:
Wait for Official Clearance: Do not return to your home or a flooded area until officials have declared it safe.
Inspect for Hazards: If you return home, check for structural damage, gas leaks, and electrical hazards before entering. Wear protective gear, such as boots and gloves, to prevent injury.
Watch for Contaminated Water: Floodwaters can be contaminated with sewage, chemicals, and debris. Avoid contact with floodwater and use bottled or boiled water for drinking and cooking until the water supply is declared safe.
Additional Tips for Community Safety
Participate in Community Preparedness Programs: Engage with local emergency management to learn about community flood plans and resources.
Educate Others: Share information about flood safety with family, friends, and neighbors, particularly those who may be more vulnerable, such as the elderly or individuals with disabilities.
By being proactive and aware, individuals and communities can better prepare for the risks associated with flooding and spring rains, ultimately enhancing their safety and resilience in the face of natural catastrophe.
